Why Join APP Colleague?
There are more than 355,000 Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and 165,000 Physician Assistants/Associates
(PAs) in the United States. As a PA or NP, you are part of one of the most rapidly growing professions in healthcare.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the number of PAs is expected to grow by >30% and NPs by >50% by the year 2029.
While APPs are recognized for filling the gap in the shortage of primary care clinicians nationwide,
28% of specialty practices also employ NPs and PAs. Some APPs practice autonomously, while others collaborate closely with an affiliated physician.
Regardless, APPs are highly skilled and trained clinicians who are not “extensions” of physicians.
As the APP workforce grows, PAs and NPs need a place where we can connect with other APPs in our region for clinical problem-solving, patient referrals, and local business connections.
PAs and NPs are present in every area of medicine – it is time for our own APP specialty referral system.

APP Colleague was developed when a Detroit-area PA, Nikki Rataj Casady, wanted to develop a local
APP referral network with her PA and NP colleagues.
While searching the websites of local healthcare systems and private practices, PA Casady was surprised and frustrated to discover that most
sites did not list their APP providers as clinicians on staff.
PAs and NPs are vital components of the U.S. healthcare system. We work in all areas of medicine and deserve to be recognized as the highly skilled clinicians we are.
